"Capture the Story" Workshop
On Thursday, February 26, SPJ-FIU Chapter members held a "Capture the Story" workshop for students to practice their visual storytelling skills. Members grouped into teams were expected to produce a photo essay. Take a look at some of their work below.
Team 1: Anthony Cool, Amanda Rabines, Danny Uria
In January 2015 the Royal Caribbean building opened. They had a partnership with FIU to renovate the Bay Vista residence hall to provide housing for performers. On Feb. 26, Anthony Cook, Amanda Rabines and Danny Uria, FIU students, walked into the building knowing it only houses performers. Cook tried to pass off as a rapper and Rabines and Uria his entourage. The security guard almost let the three pass, but unfortunately their efforts were caught by a manager inside. They didn't get far because they were clearly not artists of Royal Caribbean.
Team 2: Kathleen Devaney, Alexis Fernandez, Christian Portilla
The “Oppression Is Real” event was held at the Biscayne Bay Campus at FIU on Feb. 26, to demonstrate the various occurrences of discrimination throughout the world. Inside a dark ballroom known as the “tunnel of oppression,” students were funneled through staged scenarios of bullying and other hate crimes. As participants exited the room, they had the opportunity to write quotes that are inspired by “love."
Team 3: Daniela Rios, Caterina Balzano, Arthur Guisasola
Alejandro Duarte, 19, rushes to his car from his hospitality class. He is late for work and due to the long distance of the parking lots in the campus he utilizes his skateboard for faster access to and from class.
