Award-winning television anchor and correspondent Soledad O’Brien visited FIU on Feb. 25, 2015 as part of her ‘Black in America’ nationwide tour. FIU’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication was her last stop. O’ Brien spoke about police brutality and showed videos of her documentary “Black & Blue” that revealed instances of racial profiling. “When you make people feel like they don’t belong, you make them feel like ‘other.’ It’s very much a way of having mastery over them,” O’Brien said in her lecture. “The minute you start saying that there’s ‘us’ and there’s ‘them,’ then it’s easier to say that they’re bad.”
