Dying Words

MAR 1

Award-winning authour, professor and columnist, Samuel G. Freedman visited the FIU-Biscayne Bay Campus with Kerry Donahue, director of a radio program in Columbia University.

They co-wrote " Dying Words: The AIDS Reporting of Jeff Schmalz And How it Transformed The New York Times."

Jeff Schmalz was diagnosed with AIDS after experiencing a seizure in December 1990. He dedicated the rest of his life reporting about AIDS and how important it is to consider the disease without having to judge those who suffered from AIDS. He died three years later.

Freedman worked for The new York Times, so he worked closely with Schmalz and was also able to be mentored by him.

Now that the Excellence in Journalism is officially a wrap, take a look at some of the photos that best highlight the conference.

FIU SPJ members were among the group of 950 journalists who attended the #EIJ14 in Nashville and were able to network with industry professionals to learn about the latest trends in the evolving world of journalism.

During the Student Union ceremony, Chris Delboni was given the David L. Eshelman Outstanding Campus Adviser Award for her dedication and ability to inspire students.

The hard work of students was also recognized when Region III Director Michael Koretzky presented FIU-SPJ members with the Region III Outstanding Campus Chapter Award.

Associate Dean Allan Richards, professor Delboni and alumna Barbara Corbellini Duarte offered helpful tips to a room full of educators and student journalists on a panel about building and sustaining a successful academic newsroom like FIU’s South Florida News Service.
